Selenga Delta - bentos

End of works: November 25, 2012.
Final products:
- Analysis of hydrological, hydrochemical, microbiological, hydrobiological and ichthyological indicators of the Selenga Delta benthic zone.
- Assessment of aboriginal and invasive benthophage fishes’ impact on benthos structure and its quantity indicators.
The work completed. Nourishment of main benthophage fishes has been analyzed, their impact on structure of benthic organisms has been estimated.
No particular impact on zoobenthos of aboriginal species and such introduction species as Amur carp, bream and Amur catfish, has not been detected.
At the same time, practically all age groups of Amur sleeper considerably influence zoobenthos organisms so greatly that by autumn period all benthos organisms are eaten by Amur sleeper. There are recommendations for control of this phenomenon.

Currently, harmonized surface water quality monitoring program (developed by Hydrochemical Institute, Russia) for the Baikal Basin is under agreement with Mongolian side.

The work completed. ARCGIS data base has been developed and presented to the Project management bureau.

XI Plenipotentiary meeting on implementation the agreement between the Governments of the Russian Federation and Mongolia on the Protection and usage of transboundary water resources was held in Ulan-Ude on 14-15 December 2012.
The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Head of The Federal Agency of Water Resources Igor Nikitin. The Head of Mongolian delegation was the Deputy Minister of Nature and Green Development in Mongolia - B. Tulga.
Plenipotentiaries believe that the working group has successfully completed the previous plan approved by X Plenipotentiary meeting. Plenipotentiaries expressed a willingness to make joint efforts to further cooperation in the framework of the existing mechanism.

A workshop on tourism development in protected natural areas of Buryatia was held in the small hall of the People's Khural of the Republic of Buryatia on December 10, 2012.
The event was part of the Baikal International Conference "Ecology. Education. Tourism" and was supported by the UNDP/GEF project "Integrated Natural Resource Management in the Baikal Basin Transboundary Ecosystem", Global Nature Fund, the Administration of the Head of the Republic of Buryatia and the Government of Buryatia, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Buryatia and the NGO "Baikal Information Center "Gran".
According to the organizers, the development of sustainable tourism has become an important trend in activity protected areas. How to combine the increased flow of visitors and conservation of unique natural areas, minimize risk, and make nature closer and clearer - these are the questions that now need to be answered.
The president of Global Nature fund Mrs. Marion Hammerl and board member Ranveig Eckhoff shared their vision of prospects for development of nature tourism.

On December 5th, project NPD, State Secretary MEGD J. Batbold, project board member, officer for Transboundary Water Issues in MEGD D. Munkhbat, project officer Ch. Altanchimeg travelled to Zagreb, Croatia in order to participate in an IW:LEARN Project Twinning Exchange to the Sava River Basin Commission. This twinning exchange was conducted from 5th to the 7th of December at the premises of the International Sava River Basin Commission in Zagreb, Croatia and at various sites in the region associated with the joint management of the Sava River Basin.

A meeting of representatives of Audit Chamber of Russia and the General Auditor of the National Audit of Mongolia
On 1 October 2012 a meeting of representatives of Audit Chamber of Russia and the General Auditor of the National Audit of Mongolia, together with the representatives of Audit Chamber of Buryatia, chaired by the head of the Russian Audit Chamber Sergei Stepashin and the Deputy General Auditor of Mongolia Badamdorzh Batbayar.
The reports were presented by representatives of supervisory and executive bodies of the two countries. The main results of parallel testing the effectiveness of state regulation in the field of environmental protection in the border areas were estimated.
The joint memorandum of environmental interaction was signed as the result of the meeting. Supreme audit institutions of Russia and Mongolia "offer to the authorities of the two countries to unify the standards that treat the quality of transboundary waters and a number of other environmental indicators."

1st Asia Pacific Targeted Regional Workshop for GEF IW Projects

The workshop resembled an International Waters Conference at the regional scale, with a focus on inter-project knowledge sharing (Best Lessons and Challenges). The workshop discussed potential course modules to be provided by partners on content requested by Project Managers. Future learning priorities were also featured on the agenda, including twinning exchanges between projects and future workshops supported by GEF IW:LEARN. Facilitators were from the Global Community of Practice Partner IUCN, GEFSec as well as from actors in the region.

Shoreline clean-up campaign on Hovsgol Lake and setup of a water sanitation zone in Khatgal village
The UNDP/GEF project "Integrated Natural Resource Management in the Baikal Basin Transboundary Ecosystem" has supported a work “Shoreline clean-up of Hovsgol Lake and setup of a water sanitation zone in Khatgal village”, implemented by “Domogt-Dalai”, LLC.
Also the purpose of the work is to attract public attention to the problems of Lake Khuvsgul Shoreline pollution. More than 1500 copies of promotion materials were distributed among 500 persons. The representatives from the Village Government, specialists from Khuvsgul Protected Area, hydro-meteorological observation stations, Association of Sayan Region Herder Communities and other organizations were involved in the clean-up campaign.
The Khatgal Village Government has announced the day of 28th September as a day for cleaning-up campaign. All citizens of the village and all government and non-government organizations were involved in the campaign and cleaned the solid wastes over 3500 ha areas. Over 200 people from 20 organizations took part in the cleaning-up campaign and removed about 70 tons of solids wastes.
Protection poles have been installed with distance of 1.5 meters along the sanitation zone of Khuvsgul lake near to Khatgal village for 2 km distance in order to protect the sanitation zone from vehicles and tourists pollution. There also 3 sign boards have been installed along the lake shoreline and 1 in the Protected Area’s entrance gate.
